Leverett Brainard letter books, 1856-1875.

These two letter books contain the correspondence of several Hartford businessmen and their interests. The first (bound, with both covers) contains letters of the Hartford Planting Co. and letters Brainard wrote as Secretary of the City Fire Insurance Co. Brainard had not invested in the planting company, but advised his business partner, Newton Case, who had. Brainard resigned his position at the insurance company in order to join Case at the firm of Case, Lockwood & Co. The second book (missing top cover) holds the correspondence of Brainard & Simpson, a publishing firm run by Brainard's brother, Albert Brainard. Brainard & Simpson published the Cottage Bible and sold over 200,000 copies. The letters depict the company's methods of securing agents for countrywide distribution.

2 volumes.
